The lowdown - Trainees (in their own words) on Capital Law

 Ellie Shanahan

Why did you choose the firm? Capital are a standout commercial firm in Cardiff. They do great work for great clients both in Wales and across the UK/internationally. There is a clear Capital culture which I wanted to be part of and their training contract offered the chance to develop alongside great lawyers.

Best moment? Being offered a job in the team of my choice; completion of my first corporate private equity deal; and receiving good feedback from the team/client.

Best things about the firm? The people.

Why did you choose the firm? I’d heard quite a bit about Capital long before I joined – people always spoke highly of it, and it really did seem ‘different’ (which is annoyingly a label most law firms use…). Although a commercial firm, it doesn’t lose its human edge and it stands out from the rest of the crowd – it’s a firm full of friendly and brilliantly ambitious people, who are passionate about what they do best.

Best moment? Two ‘best moments’ stick out in my mind. The first was having the opportunity to spend nine months on secondment at The Royal Mint. During the placement, I got to work closely with their legal counsel on a variety of legal and commercial issues. The insight I had was completely invaluable and gave me exposure to work, individuals and matters far beyond those which would ordinarily be expected for/experienced by a trainee in private practice. The second was, naturally, qualifying as a solicitor. Nothing can prepare you for the elating feeling of reaching this milestone after all the hard work and effort since starting your law degree. I’m just pleased that I get to continue my career progression in such a great firm as Capital.

Best things about the firm? Your voice is always heard at Capital, whether you’re a managing partner or a paralegal. As a trainee, I was surprised by how much I was valued, how much responsibility I was given, and how my opinion and interests were taken into account. The career and personal development opportunities are also excellent here. You’re given a wide range of experience in the various departments (each with their own sub-teams and specialities), and have the chance to work with excellent clients, both within the UK and internationally. What’s particularly brilliant about Capital is the way in which it embraces individuality – rather than forcing you to conform with the corporate norm, you’re encouraged to be yourself. It might sound like stating the obvious, but the benefits of this mentality really are significant.

Why did you choose the firm? Friendly culture; Not your stereotypical law firm – moved away from traditional outdated processes and thinking; Based in Cardiff – a great city to live in!; Variety of clients – from new local start-up companies to household names; Seats which complemented the electives I chose on the LPC; Reputation; Welsh law initiative

Best moment? Attending a judicial mediation at the Employment Tribunal; Working alongside an associate and partner on the merger of Welsh accountancy practice, a deal which was later named as Insider Media’s deal of the month for April; Working with the corporate team on a £9.8m investment for one of the firm’s biggest clients; Acting for the respondent on an unfair dismissal case from initial instruction to tribunal; Receiving positive feedback from a senior partner

Worst moment? Managing to jam several printers the night before a disclosure deadline

Best things about the firm? Approachability of colleagues in each team; Variety of work; The level of responsibility; Having an input and control over your training – both in terms of seat rotations and the type of work you’re interested in; Work/life balance; Friday drinks trolley

Worst thing about the firm? The extreme fluctuation in the office temperature
