As a major US firm with over 1,200 lawyers and 16 offices worldwide, Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton impresses trainees with its ‘prestige’ and the ‘challenging, innovative work’ involved in ‘complex international projects’. The firm regularly handles big-ticket corporate and finance work, and houses market-leading M&A, private equity and acquisition finance groups.

Cleary Gottlieb is looking to recruit 10 – 14 trainees for a 2018 start, and has no shortage of candidates with 2,000 applicants annually. The first-year salary is £42,000, rising to £47,000 for second-years and £96,000 for NQs.

Recent London office work includes assisting Lafarge on its €40bn merger with Holcim, and acting for HSBC Holdings in a $3.75bn dual-tranche issuance of convertible bonds.

Cleary Gottlieb has achieved some excellent feedback in our survey this year, and has been named a winner in four categories – confidence in being kept on, remuneration satisfaction, diversity and international secondments. The firm is said to promote a ‘collegiate and friendly culture’. New joiners can look forward to being ‘treated as an adult from day one’, and will get to work on ‘headline-worthy cases’.

If the firm were a fictional character it would be… Hermione Granger – smart, assertive and kind-hearted.
