DLA Piper formally announced today (17 January) that its regional group now numbers members in 14 countries across Northern, Southern and Eastern Africa, following the 1 October 2013 addition of legal practices B L & Associés of Algeria, Rubeya & Co Advocates of Burundi, and Ellis Shilengudwa Inc. of Namibia. All three firms have expertise in commercial law.
B L & Associés, which comprises two partners and eight associates who can all practice in either Algeria or France, specializes in investment law, commercial contracts, M&A, capital markets, tax and customs law, insurance, construction and real estate as well as criminal, civil and commercial litigation matters.
Rubeya & Co Advocates brings a team of eight lawyers with experience in Intellectual Property and competition law.
Ellis Shilengudwa Inc, which relies on four directors and seven associates, focuses on corporate and commercial law.
DLA Piper Managing Director of Europe & Africa Frederico Sutti welcomed the development and mentioned the possibility of further firm growth in Africa:
'We are very pleased to have expanded our network into the key developing markets of Algeria, Namibia and Burundi. The new member firms are highly regarded for providing exceptional standards of work for clients locally and internationally. As we continue to build our capabilities and presence across Africa, we will maintain our commitment to carefully selecting strategic partners that will be beneficial for our Group members and will add value for our clients', Sutti said.
The firm could not presently comment on whether UK trainees will be soon able to undertake an international secondment at the offices of the three newly joined firms.
