You perfected the client role-play part of your PSC and are now ready to start putting your skills into practice, however client contact is not always readily available - much to the chagrin of many trainees. Without wanting to generalise too much, it is more likely to be in big City and corporate firms that there is less available due to larger intakes, more demanding clients and billion-dollar deals. This year taking the top spot is US firm McDermott Will & Emery which gives its trainees 'a lot of client contact from day one' and plenty of responsibility running files and working on 'good-quality work'. At Farleys Solicitors you can expect to have 'more responsibility' than your peers and particularly in the family department a 'huge amount of court experience'. Andrew Jackson trainees have the 'opportunity to run their own files' and those at Wedlake Bell get 'decent work and lots of drafting practice' - quite possibly for one of its celebrity clients. Stephens Scown and Forbes are next, with trainees at the former getting a 'frequent and consistent level of client contact' and those at the latter get the opportunity to 'see a matter through from beginning to end and feel you've made a difference to a client'. Hodge Jones & Allen trainees have ample 'client contact and responsibility for running your own files from day one' and Bates Wells & Braithwaite offers the 'freedom to communicate with clients' and it is not unusual to be 'placed as the main contact for a new client'. At Coffin Mew there is a 'great level of client contact and quality of work, which comes with a greater responsibility'. Trainees at Howes Percival feel that they get 'more client contact than others' and are surrounded by 'friendlier and reasonable' supervisors who makes sure that the trainees are 'well looked after.'
