You will hear countless stories about the high possibility of the photocopying room becoming your new office once you start working and few trainees will deny that there will be the occasional administrative tasks to grin and bear. Whilst doing a litigation seat it is a definite possibility that you will do your fair share of bundling and paginating and at firms with a heavy corporate focus you will have to work your way around due diligence. However, the firms in this table have managed to offer fast-paced and interesting tasks alongside the necessary grunt work. This year the table is a heady mix of US firms and smaller regional practices with a healthy dose of London firms thrown in. Top-placed this year is Andrew Jackson, which offers its trainees a 'wide and varied amount of work' that can at times be 'challenging' but never makes them feel 'out of their depth'. Forbes' trainees spend very little time doing 'menial tasks' and are 'actively involved in high-quality work' from day one. The first US firm in this table Covington & Burling keeps 'grunt' work to a minimum, which makes for a much more interesting experience'. Stephens Scown trainees find the work at the firm 'challenging, testing and hugely varied' and like that they can 'call upon anybody, in any team or office if you need some extra advice/assistance on a particular matter'. At McDermott Will & Emery the small intake means plenty of 'exposure to high-quality work' to get stuck into and the 'new shiny offices and friendly environment' are also appreciated. Fladgate trainees get 'lots of drafting experience and very little photocopying and scanning experience', meanwhile with excellence in healthcare matters, trainees at Capsticks enjoy the 'interesting' work that they handle and the fact that they get 'exposed to a broader range of work as some departments are quite generalist'. Lancashire firm Farleys Solicitors insists on a 'hands-on' approach from trainees and trainees appreciate the 'high levels of responsibility throughout training', whilst trainees at Debevoise & Plimpton have 'greater autonomy' than their peers and 'gain experience from real work'. Blake Lapthorn provides 'plenty of responsibility, more control over your destiny, better communication, a great choice of training contract seats and high-profile clients'.
