ABOUT NOTTINGHAM LAW SCHOOL

Nottingham Law School, part of Nottingham Trent University, is one the UK’s largest full-service university law schools. We support students at every stage of legal training from undergraduate through to Masters, research, professional and practitioner levels. The school has an unrivalled reputation for providing the LPC, BPTC (formerly the BVC) and GDL. Our students are now able to study in London as well as in Nottingham. We have partnered with Kaplan Law School to open a brand new campus offering our LPC, BPTC and GDL in central London.

LEGAL PRACTICE COURSE

Our highly regarded LPC has received the highest possible rating in every Law Society assessment. The course has been designed to be challenging and stimulating for students and responsive to the needs of firms, varying from large commercial to smaller high-street practices. The LPC is offered by full-time and part-time study in Nottingham and full-time only in London. We have designed a new style LPC from 2009 onwards which will enable you to select pathways that lead to a specific type of practice, or maintain a broad-based professional legal education if you are not sure yet what type of practice you intend to move to. In addition to our broad-based LPC, we are planning to offer corporate, commercial and public funding pathways. Our LPC allows you to select your pathway after you get here, rather than having to decide in advance.

BAR VOCATIONAL COURSE

We are one of only ten establishments validated by the Bar Council to deliver the BPTC. The course has been designed to develop a range of core practical skills, and to equip students to succeed in the fast-changing environment of practice at the
Bar. Particular emphasis is placed on the skill of advocacy. The BPTC is taught by qualified practitioners and utilises the same integrated and interactive teaching methods as all of the school’s other professional courses. Students learn by doing and we provide an environment in which students are encouraged to realise their
full potential.

GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN LAW

For non-law graduates who intend to become solicitors or barristers in the UK, we offer the opportunity to pursue qualifying law degree status through the Graduate Diploma in Law by both full-time and distance learning study routes. This intensive course covers the seven core subjects of an undergraduate law degree and has a pass rate of over 90%. Successful completion of the GDL (full-time) at first attempt, guarantees students a place on our excellent rated LPC and consideration for our BPTC. Students who complete their GDL with us and then embark upon our excellent rated LPC or BPTC will be eligible for a full LLB on successful completion of that professional course.

LLM PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE

Students who complete our LPC or BPTC can choose to ‘top up’ to an LLM. We will award you 90 credit points towards the 180 credits required for the LLM. You will need to complete a week-long summer-school programme after you have completed your LPC/BPTC, and a Professional Practice Dissertation (20,000 words) on a subject relevant to professional practice in the legal services sector. Students who have not completed their professional studies with us are still eligible to take this qualification; please contact the Law School in advance as you may need to complete additional modules or provide evidence of learning.
